The area around the city of Alba is true wine country, where vineyards cover every possible inch of land, making Chianti look almost barren! Of course, where there is good wine, there is good food and the region abounds in famous restaurants. Giovanna, an independent producer of wine, admirably manages her grandparents’ farm and bed and breakfast single-handedly—a childhood dream of hers. She abandoned the business world for a more tranquil pace and loves welcoming travelers who are looking for a home away from home, wholesome foods, and the simple pleasures of country life. The mustard-colored house backed by striped hillsides has a separate guest entrance. A large informal living room filled with books and local wine itineraries includes a corner kitchen where guests sit at a table for a self-service breakfast. Upstairs are the three country-style bedrooms, each with a different color scheme. The pink room has twin beds and a vineyard view while the green and blue rooms have queen beds. They each have new, immaculate bathrooms, and are decorated with grandmother’s lace curtains, old photographs, brass beds, and patchwork quilts. Three apartments for longer stays accommodating two to four persons have just been completed. Directions: From Alba (6 km) follow signs for Barbaresco. Before town at the sign for Tre Stelle, look for Cascina delle Rose on the left. From Asti follow signs for Alba-Barbaresco-Treiso. After Barbaresco, on the road towards Alba, watch for Tre Stelle and the bed and breakfast on the right. Rates: • Price for two persons: 85 EURO • Price for seven persons: 520 –990 EURO
