Only 30 kilometers from Milan, the Cascina Caremma is the pure definition of agritourism: a 100-acre working farm using strictly organic methods; offering accommodation and meals using more than 80% of the farm’s own produce; and organizing lessons in organic production and the agri-ecosystem. It is also part of the Ticino River Park reserve, which can be explored by bike, horse, or foot only. The typical cascina in northern Italy is a quad formation with large inner courtyard lined with multi-coloured houses, stalls and barns. Over the years the very involved hosts, Gabriele and family, have vastly improved the comfort level and charming decor of the accommodations, which are situated in two side-by-side colorful ex-farmers’ houses. Cheerful rooms (with air conditioning), have country furnishings and beamed ceilings and are accented with matching floral curtains and bedspreads. The delightful downstairs dining rooms maintain their true country flavor with antiques, fireplace, and wood-burning oven dating to the 1600s. On weekends people from the city come to enjoy the excellent, wholesome meals. Scheduled to open in April is a “well-being” center with indoor pool, steam bath, sauna, natural therapy, yoga classes. Within reach are Malpensa airport, the lake region, Vigevano, and Morimondo. Directions: Exit Autostrada A7 (Genova-Milano) at Binasco and head towards Casorate Primo, Besate.
