Country Home in Italy Bolsena, Umbria |
Bolsena is a quaint, ancient village 18 kilometers from Orvieto right on picturesque Lake Bolsena with its small ports and two islands. Marco Zammarano, with his long hotelier experience in Rome, took over the family’s 60-acre hillside farm property just above town and opened lovely bed and breakfast accommodation within two stone farmhouses. The main house holds eleven beamed bedrooms each with en-suite bathroom, satellite TV, and fridge, simply but comfortably appointed with a mix of wicker furniture and country antiques. All but two have gorgeous views over the manicured garden and swimming pool out to the lake. The remaining four bedrooms are farther up the wooded road in another house with its own swimming pool. A third residence with an additional ten rooms was being completed when we visited. A restaurant for guests only has an ample outside terrace enjoying sunsets over the lake and takes advantage of ingredients fresh from the farm. Here you have the convenience of being near town and many interesting Etruscan sights while being immersed in utter tranquillity. The lake itself offers many activities including a fascinating boat ride to the small, historic island of Bisentina. Directions: Exit the A1 autostrada at Orvieto and follow signs for Bolsena. Just before town at the Trattoria Castagneta, turn right up to La Riserva. Shuttle service is available from the Rome airport or Orvieto train station. Rates: Price for two persons: 111 EURO
