N012
Montebelli
Caldana, Tuscany
Description:
After living in South Africa for 20 years, the Tosi family returned to their homeland in search of a piece of land that in some way resembled their beloved Africa. The gorgeous Montebelli property, situated in Maremma, the wild west of Italy, fit the bill with its 300-plus acres of mountain, hills, and plain, all close to the sea—the one essential element, according to Lorenzo, which brings people allegria. Lorenzo, his simpatica wife, Carla, and son, Alessandro, now divide their time and energy between their guests and production of wines and olive oil. At the foot of the hills is the main guesthouse where most of the rooms are situated. Others, each with separate entrance, are in two one-story wings connecting to an outdoor dining area. The best rooms are in the main house, decorated tastefully with antiques and including all the amenities of a regular hotel. The half-board requirement allows guests to sample the marvelous cuisine of the area within the characteristic dining room featuring the stone wheel from the original press. This is unexplored territory, full of historical treasures and Etruscan remains. And if that’s not enough, scenic walks on marked trails (a must for the views!), a swimming pool, tennis courts, horse riding, and summer concerts are available right on the property. Directions: From the north, exit at Gavorrano Scalo from Aurelia SS 1 follow signs for Caldana. Just before Caldana, turn at the Montebelli sign and follow the dirt road to the end.
