La Torretta
Casperia, Lazio
Description:
After 20 years of managing guided tours throughout Italy, Welsh-born Maureen, along with her architect husband, Roberto, has literally brought her expertise “home” to La Torretta. Restoration work on the three-story 15th-century building, tucked away up on a narrow cobblestoned street of this yet undiscovered medival hilltop village, took three years to complete. The entrance stairway leads to a large open and elegant living room with a collection of the family’s paintings, stone fireplace and 16th-century frescoes discovered during the restoration process. All seven bedrooms are individually decorated with taste and design in soft beige tones which harmonize with travertine bathrooms, and have stunning views over the rooftops of charming Casperia. A scrumptuous breakfast and dinner upon request are served upstairs in a dining area with panoramic terrace overlooking olive groves and the wooded Sabine hills. This virgin territory is filled with hilltop villages to explore, besides being on the border of Umbria, and is just a 45-minute train ride from Rome. Delightful hostess Maureen and her daughters customize itineraries for their guests and organize cooking courses, while Roberto specializes in ancient Roman architecture and archaeology. A separate self-catering apartment across the street is now available. Torretta guests share membership of a pool and tennis club near town. Directions: From Rome or Florence exit the A1 at Ponzano-Soratte (new exit not marked on maps). After railroad crossing turn right and follow to T junction. Turn left and follow signs to Casperia (20 min). Cars are easily parked on the street below and luggage is delivered by special vehicle.
