Country Home in Italy Grotte di Castro, Lazio |
In the northern reaches of Lazio, bordering Umbria and Tuscany, is the stately, 17th-century castle of the noble Mancini Caterini family. Antonello and Cristina, a gracious and sociable couple, decided to transfer their young family from Rome and reside permanently on the vast wooded property, overseeing the agricultural activity as once did Antonello’s ancestors, among them Cardinal Caterini, powerful advisor to the Pope in the mid-1800’s. They have done an admirable job of restoring the large, ivy-covered farmhouse just below the family’s residence and creating four charming apartments plus eight bedrooms for guests. The bi-level apartments maintain their original rustic flavor and are cheerfully decorated with antique armoires and dressers, country fabrics for curtains and bedspreads, and wrought-iron beds. Accommodation in low season and for shorter stays is offered in the Granaio 1 and 2, with four bedrooms on each floor and individual living rooms, which can also be used as separate apartments. On the ground floor you find outdoor and indoor eating areas, billiard room, and game room overlooking a lovely swimming pool. Activities including tennis, horseback riding, wine itineraries, and boat rides and sailing on nearby Lake Bolsena, besides exploration of the many interesting ancient Etruscan towns in this very beautiful countryside. Directions: From the A1 autostrada exit at Orvieto and follow signs first for Bolsena then Castel S. Giorgio-S. Lorenzo Nuovo-Grotte di Castro. Just past town turn right at the Castello sign. CASTELLO Rates: Price for two persons: 90 EURO Weekly rate: 1000 EURO
