Country Home in Italy Loreto, Abbruzzi e Molise |
Mario and Gabriella Tortella left an intense corporate life and came back to their peaceful Abruzzo region with the intention of concentrating on organic farming and hospitality. They have succeeded and today the 90 acre property overlooking the Apennine mountains is made up of olive groves, woods, a kiwi plantation, orchards and pastures for farm animals, plus fields of grain and cereals. Although a whole new field for Mario, Gabriella had previously worked in agricultural development for the region. Guests are welcomed like old friends and are accommodated within the six country style bedrooms upstairs in the main 300-year-old house or in one of the more independent apartments next door. Very much in keeping with the simple rustic features of the farmhouse, they have wrought iron beds, antique armoires, new tiled bathrooms and a living room in common. The largest, called “La Nonna” or grandmothers room has a fireplace and kitchenette. Guests convene in the evening for conversation and an excellent regional meal prepared by Gabriella’s mother, Olga, either out on the covered porch or in one of the vaulted brick dining rooms. All ingredients come directly from the farm and traditional recipes come from the family’s own recipes passed on through the generations. Served are homemade pastas, country soups, fresh breads, vegetables dishes all flavoured with their prize winning extra virgin olive oil. A very pleasant experience and base from which to explore Loreto, Penne, Pescara, Atri, three national parks among others. Alternatively, one can relax poolside and just enjoy the views, the tranquillity, and superb meals. Directions: Exit Autostrada A25 at Pescara-Villanova and follow for Penne on SS 81. 6 km before Penne and just before S. Pellegrino, turn right after bar (or call from there) on gravel road up to Le Magnolie. Total of 18 km from exit. Rates: Price for two persons: 70 EURO
