Country Home in Italy Massa Marittima, Tuscany |
It would be difficult for anyone with a passion for the outdoors to resist the challenge offered Federico when he inherited the 1,000-plus-acre estate of his great-grandfather in the wilderness of Maremma. He and his energetic wife from Verona, Elisabetta, plunged in and in two years made this dream come true. The results are notable and very ambitious, with the complete restoration of four stone farmhouses scattered about the vast property comprised of wooded hills, olive groves, and cultivated fields of grain and sunflowers. Guests first arrive at the imposing 1850s main villa, which houses the reception office and private quarters of the family. Comfortable apartments and rooms divided among the various farmhouses, are nicely furnished with country pieces old and new and can accommodate from two to ten persons. Guests have the use of four swimming pools, mountain bikes, sauna, exercise, and game rooms, Jacuzzi, and massage therapy. They convene at Podernovo where Tuscan meals are served in the exposed stone dining room with fireplace, or out on the patio looking out over the valley and up to austere Massa Marittima. The Etruscan towns of Massa Marittima, Volterra, Vetulonia, and Populonia are waiting to be explored and you are also close to the seaside. The summer months offer a rich musical program of operas and classical concerts in the main piazza and villas. Directions: Drive for 2 km on the gravel road from Massa Marittima where signs are indicated for Montebamboli. Rates: Price for two persons: 80 EURO
