Villa Acquaviva
Montemerano, Tuscany
Description:
One result of increasing interest in the singular attractions of the Maremma, or southern Tuscany, is the opening or expansion of several noteworthy places to stay. The Villa Acquaviva, once owned by nobility, has been a small family hotel for the past 14 years. The ambitious proprietors, Serafino and Valentina, completed extensive remodeling to include eight guestrooms named for and painted in the colors of local wildflowers. The bedrooms all have private baths and are decorated with country antiques and wrought-iron beds. The charming breakfast room with its large windows overlooks the lovely swimming pool and a lush flower garden and on to the gently rolling landscape up to the villlage of Montemerano—a quaint, medieval town with excellent restaurants and artisan shops. Breakfast of homemade cakes, breads, and jams can be taken inside or out on the patio. There are ten newer, additional rooms in a stone farmhouse on the property plus eight in another, joined together by a glassed-in reception area. These are our favorites, with beautiful local antiques and colorful matching fabrics adorning beds and windows. A swimming pool in the garden with bar service and tennis courts are attractive features of the complex. A small restaurant has just been opened where typical Maremman dishes are served. Directions: From Rome, take the Aurelia coastal road, exiting at Vulci. Follow signs for Manciano, then for Montemerano. Acquaviva is just outside the village and well-marked.
