Castello di Proceno
Proceno (VT), Lazio
Description:
The 12th century hilltop fortress with tower dominating the valley can be spotted kms away. The fascinating Castello di Proceno in the Lazio region bordering Tuscany and Umbria is a unique accommodation and one which combines some of the main reasons for which travellers choose agritourism accommodation - historical context, authentic ambience, unspoiled landscapes, regional foods and wines and congenial hosts. The owners have done an outstanding job of restoring some of the farmer’s quarters which make up part of the actual village grouped around the tower. The typical Enoteca restaurant overseen directly by the Cecchini’s, complete with cantina, fireplace traces of Etruscan origins, leads to a labyrinth of uderground tunnels and stairways which connect to four of the apartments, while the remaining three (Primavera, Estate Autunno, named after the seasons) are closer to the ancient pentagonal walls of the tower and castle and are immersed in a wooded area leading down to the swimming pool and open countryside. All apartments have one or two bedrooms, a kitchenette facility and most have feature either a fireplace or terrace. Directions: Easily reached, the castello is right in the village of Proceno, 16 km north of Lake Bolsena. Follow SS 2 from the lake to Acquapendente and after 3 km turn left for Proceno.
