Casali della Aiola
Vagliagli, Tuscany
Description:
The Aiola opened its doors to guests four years ago when daughter Federica and her husband Enrico restored the farmers’ houses on the wine estate’s vast property in Chianti. The family’s villa with its ancient origins sits across the street from the guest quarters almost completely hidden by enormous oak and cypress trees. The eight bedrooms, one of which sleeps four persons, are divided between two floors of a stone house, each having a separate outside entrance. Original architectural features have been preserved and rooms are decorated with wrought-iron beds and antique or reproduction armoires. The vineyards come right up to the house and a wide, open view of the hills is offered to the other side. The barn next door includes common areas such as the breakfast room, where Federica’s fresh-baked coffee cakes are served, and a living room. With Federica’s mother, Signora Malagodi, being the President of the Wine Tourism Association, visits to the cellar and the villa, and wine tasting begin right here at the Aiola. Federica and Enrico’s aim to make each guest feel special is evident in the time they dedicate to suggesting itineraries with maps, and making reservations at restaurants, museums, and local concerts. At 12 kilometers from Siena and an easy distance from the highlights of the region, the Aiola serves as an excellent touring base. Total silence reigns here, with only the buzz of cicadas breaking it. Directions: From Siena follow route 102 just past Vagliagli—the Aiola property (well marked) is on this same road
